Purpose and objectives
These regulations govern the organization, access procedures, and management of the Foundation Year Program established at the Università degli Studi Internazionali di Roma – UNINT.
The Foundation Year is a preparatory pre-university training program aimed at:
- Providing foreign and Italian students who do not meet the minimum requirements for university admission with the skills needed to enroll in Italian undergraduate programs;
- supporting the linguistic, cultural, and academic integration of international students into the Italian university environment.
Target participants
The Foundation Year is open to:
- Foreign students holding an upper-secondary school diploma obtained after at least 11 years of schooling, which is not sufficient for direct admission to Italian universities;
- Italian students who wish to strengthen their linguistic or disciplinary preparation before enrolling in a degree program;
- EU and non-EU students interested in attending university courses in Italy;
- Non-EU students must hold a study visa issued by the Italian consular authorities.
Program structure and duration
The Foundation Year lasts one academic year.
The program consists of compulsory and elective modules for a total of 60 CFU/ECTS, divided into:
- Italian language and culture;
- preparatory subjects related to the chosen university pathway;
- transversal skills and university orientation.
The academic calendar follows the university’s official schedule and includes lectures, workshops, tutoring sessions, and periodic assessments.
Admission procedures
Admission to the Foundation Year requires:
- completion and submission of the application form to internationalstudents@unint.eu (Annex A);
- evaluation of the academic qualifications submitted (diploma, official translation, and declaration of value or CIMEA statement).
Foreign applicants must also include:
- a copy of their passport or identity document;
- the original version of their educational qualification;
- the declaration of value or CIMEA statement;
- any language certificates held.
Language of instruction and linguistic requirements
The Foundation Year is offered in:
- English, with Italian as a foreign language in the first semester;
- Italian in the second semester.
International students attending the program in Italian must achieve at least a B2 level of linguistic competence by the end of the program, certified internally or through recognized institutions such as CILS, CELI, PLIDA, and CLIDA.
Attendance, assessments and evaluation
Attendance is compulsory and is validated by participation in at least 75% of the hours required for each module.
At the end of the program, students must pass a final proficiency examination assessing:
- Language skills;
- disciplinary preparation in the study areas followed;
- university orientation skills.
A positive result leads to the issuance of a Foundation Year Completion Certificate, indicating the credits earned and the competencies acquired.
Outcomes and university access
Successful completion of the Foundation Year:
- Grants direct admission to the degree programs of the University offering the program, provided that the specific requirements of each program are met;
- may be recognized by other Italian universities as an equivalent access qualification for students with 11 years of prior schooling;
- does not constitute an academic degree, but a preparatory pathway for university enrollment.
The final certificate may be used for pre-enrollment through Universitaly and for applying for a university study visa.
Fees and payments
The cost of the Foundation Year is €5,400.
Payment may be made in 6 installments with predetermined deadlines or in a single installment.
