The Human Resources Team at the British Embassy in Rome is seeking an intern for a period of up to six months starting on 1 December 2026 (please note that the start date may be delayed should security checks take longer than originally expected). This is a curricular internship/tirocinio curriculare and forms part of an academic programme. The successful candidate will normally be required to be present in the office in Rome.
The British Embassy Rome is part of the United Kingdom’s diplomatic network in Italy. The internship offers students the opportunity to gain practical experience in an international and multicultural environment, supporting defined projects within the HR Team while developing skills relevant to their academic studies.
The internship is a learning experience and does not replace a vacant position or constitute an employment relationship. The successful candidate will support the team on a range of activities and projects under the supervision of the Internship Tutor, maintaining a clear balance between operational contribution, learning, and professional development.
We are looking for a candidate who is a good communicator in English and Italian, with strong organizational skills, attention to detail, discretion and a genuine interest in Human Resources and people development.
Main duties / responsabilities
- HR administration and document management. Support the review, updating and organization of HR documentation, Forms, Terms and Conditions of Service and other administrative records, in line with the instructions provided.
- Internship administration. Assist in the preparation of internship advertisements, in liaison with universities, and administration of internship documentation.
- Staff communications and crisis preparedness. Support staff communications, including updates to the One Stop Shop Intranet and systems used for crisis management.
- Occupational health coordination. Provide administrative support in planning vaccinations and medical appointments, ensuring appropriate separation and confidentiality of personal and health data.
- Learning, development, and engagement. Assist in organizing learning, development, and employee engagement initiatives, including preparing materials and monitoring participation.
- HR data and reporting. Maintain and improve the quality of HR databases and contribute to reports and indicators using Excel, Microsoft systems, and other approved tools.
- Please note that duties may be adapted according to the individual Internship Learning Agreement, authorized access levels, and learning objectives.
Required experience and skills
- Current enrolment in a relevant undergraduate or postgraduate programme and eligibility to undertake a curricular internship through an authorized University.
- Fluent spoken and written English and Italian, appropriate to the duties of the internship.
- Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage several activities while meeting agreed deadlines and instructions.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment.
- Ability to handle personal information with discretion, integrity, and professionalism.
- Demonstrable interest in Human Resources, people administration and process improvement.
Desirable experience
- Familiarity with Microsoft 365, particularly Microsoft Lists, for organizing and monitoring data.
- Interest in data analysis, internal communications, and the digitalization of administrative processes.
- Basic knowledge of employment law, people management or public administration.
- Awareness of the principles of responsible use of Artificial Intelligence, including validation of outputs and protection of information.
Working arrangements and supervision
The Internship Tutor will set priorities, objectives, access permissions and working arrangements, providing regular guidance and feedback.
Duties will be appropriate to the authorized security level and permissions granted. The successful candidate will not be required to access information or systems that are not necessary for the learning experience.
Any hours beyond those agreed must be authorized in advance and compensated through time off in lieu, without exceeding the hours set out in the individual Internship Learning Agreement.
The internship will be carried out in accordance with applicable health and safety, data protection, and information security requirements.
Terms and conditions
The ‘tirocinio curriculare’ is intended for undergraduate students as part of their education/studies or graduates still completing their education. The candidate will have to go through a selection process by way of an oral interview.
Prior to appointment of the successful candidate, the Embassy will have had to sign an agreement (Convenzione di Tirocinio) with the university setting out the arrangements including tutor, health & safety and insurance cover. The selected candidate will be required to complete the necessary security clearance process and provide all requested documentation.
The intern will be granted a number of credits (crediti formativi), as indicated by the university. The internship is not a work contract and as such is not paid. However, the Embassy will pay the intern a monthly allowance of €350 per month. This amount is not subject to tax under current local legislation. The intern would be expected to be engaged for an average of 25 hours per week, within the range of 09.00-4.00pm. Flexibility is ensured to accommodate the intern’s need in case of university exams or personal commitments.
Other administrative details are set out in the university ‘progetto formativo’ to be signed once appointed to the internship. Please note that, in accordance with Italian law, the successful candidate will have to finish the 6-month internship before the graduation day..
