Music by children & kids

Project funded by UNINT – Third Mission/Social Impact call (a.y. 2022/2023)
Project Manager: Stefano Luigi Mangia, UNINT lecturer

Objectives

"Music by children & kids. Improvisation in the family relationship: functional and dysfunctional sounds in the family's harmonic process” is a project that aims to build assisted pathways of resilience and the development of the emotional-affective dimension of children and adolescents. Specifically, the focus is on letting children and families experience the pedagogical  and formative value of jazz languageand improvisational conduct. Predominant is, therefore, the  language of improvisation as an element to stimulate creativity, a necessary pedagogical tool against intellectual passivity.
More generally, the project aims to:

  • promote the pedagogical value of jazz and improvised music;
  • recover creative thinking through the shared experience of musical practices;
  • enhance singing and instrumental skills to communicate emotions, feelings and atmospheres;
  • promote the inclusion of differences;
  • promote relational aptitude and break down socio-cultural barriers;
  • raise awareness among students, young people and the community on social issues of today's interest;
  • promote an intentional "educational-affective community culture" among all social actors and their networks;
  • promote an alternative to the traditional education and care system to be offered especially to users in vulnerable situations;
  • implement an assisted resilience intervention in the area where the welfare model is implemented in order to overcome the criticalities caused by contemporary multilevel emergencies (social, educational-parental, institutional, health, environmental, war, etc.);
  • prevent and stem the youth distress phenomena of our time through multidisciplinary interventions focused on the recovery of the "intergenerational division" and the "dialogue between adults and minors and between peers";
  • promote knowledge and professional implementation of the construct of "widespread parenting" among operators in the educational and care relationship and families through educational and didactic community action capable of involving every family unit interested in developmental issues and educational poverty and in the development of the emotional-affective dimension of children.

Actions

Organisation of a public concert with free participation entitled “Music by children & kids. Improvisation in the family relationship: functional and dysfunctional sounds in the family's harmonic process" on 10 June 2023 at 4:00 pm, in the Great Hall of Università degli Studi Internazionali di Roma – UNINT.

Impact

The socio-economic context is the suburbs of Rome, specifically the neighborhood Ponte di Nona. The invitation to participate is in fact also addressed to families living in the new Nuova Ponte di Nona neighborhood, whose construction started in 2002. The neighborhood is located in Municipality VI, the most populous and youngest Municipality in Rome, which records the highest index of socio-economic hardship. Due to the lack of services, facilities and cultural centres, the School constitutes one of the few centres of aggregation able to offer reception, availability of resources, makeup activities and cultural enhancement.
The evaluation of the cultural and socio-economic impact of the initiative finds its elective methodology in qualitative-quantitative research.

Indicators

  • Questionnaires for the inhabitants of the Ponte di Nona neighborhood who took part in the initiative;
  • dedicated focus groups aimed at highlighting the results achieved in terms of capacity building, support and development of care and parenting functions in the family;
  • number of participants in the initiative.
