Project funded by UNINT – Third Mission/Social Impact call (a.y. 2023/2024)
Project Manager: Andrea De Petris, UNINT fixed-term type A Researcher
Objectives
The initiative aims to encourage the development of civic awareness of the importance of the right to vote and the role of the European institutions for the everyday life of citizens.
Objective aimed in particular at students in the final years of secondary school: young people who will vote for the first time in the next elections for the European Parliament, scheduled for 9 June.
Actions
The initiative was co-designed with the IV J class of Liceo Classico Vivona in Rome. It involves the realisation of an illustrative seminar on the European Union and its institutions with their specific competences, as well as on the civic and political meaning of voting.
The project includes a series of training meetings delivered online and one in-presence at Università degli Studi Internazionali di Roma – UNINT.
At the end of the meetings, the students are expected to write a paper on the project's themes. The creators of the three best papers will be rewarded with a trip to Brussels, accompanied by the teacher in change for the project, to get an inside look at the workings of the European institutions, meet those who work there and understand the importance of their vote, which will help decide the composition of the next European Parliament and, indirectly, the structure of the next European Commission.
Impact
Given the traditionally low participation in the European vote and the lack of knowledge about the impact of Brussels decisions on the everyday life of EU citizens, this initiative aims to train young citizens to cast their vote with interest and awareness.
Indicators
- Project evaluation questionnaire for participating students;
- evaluation questionnaire on the outcome of the visit to the European institutions for the participating students;
- verification of Liceo Vivona's interest in repeating the project in subsequent years.
