HAPPILY MIXED UP!
cultural advancement, dialogue between disciplines and dissemination
UNINT established the Laboratory of Mathematical Sciences (LabSciMat) in spring 2010, with the Professor of Algebra Prof. Giandomenico Boffi as director, to promote the research, application, and publication of the mathematical sciences, including historical aspects and fundamentals. The Laboratory aims to promote dialogue between mathematical and other sciences and all dimensions of human knowledge. Internal and external professionals cooperate with the Laboratory.
“Mathematical Sciences” – like the English centre of the same name at Cambridge University – includes not only mathematics, but also statistics, econometrics, information technology, etc., respecting the identity of the Università degli Studi Internazionali di Roma – UNINT.
In our title, the word “Laboratory” includes but it is not limited to the availability of adequate computational resources; it implies more than a term such as “Centre” or similar, also referring to the aspect of work in progress which is represented in our unit’s approach.
The Laboratory hosts a research unit of the INdAM (National Institute of Higher Mathematics) that also includes professionals from other universities. With the cooperation of the above-mentioned unit the Laboratory organises seminars and workshops, focusing mainly on algebra and differential geometry.
LabSciMat is interested in the teaching of Mathematics, both in schools and colleges, and cooperates with the Roman branch of PLS (the Italian national project for promoting the STEM disciplines) in organizing PLS Mathematical Summer School for high school students of Latium.
The Laboratory is one of the drivers of the Mediterranean Youth Mathematical Championship – MYMC; its director is the president of the Operations Committee.
The Championship was established at the Università degli Studi Internazionali di Roma – UNINT in 2013 and has now reached its sixth edition (cf. cross-references in LabSciMat Events). The Championship, promoted and funded by MIUR, INdAM, ICTP (International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste), PLS, UMI (Italian Mathematical Union) and the four Roman universities, Sapienza, Tor Vergata, Roma Tre and UNINT, takes place annually in a different location agreed among promoters. There has been a steady increase in the number of Mediterranean countries taking part in the Championship (from seven to seventeen, i.e. almost every Mediterranean country). The 2019 edition was officially sponsored by the Italian National Commission for UNESCO, in recognition of its considerable cultural value.
