The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

The University of International Studies of Rome - UNINT organizes the event entitled "The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities" which will be held on Wednesday 8 May 2024 from 16 pm in room 00 and in live streaming.

Event description

The event aims to explore the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), the first international agreement on universal human rights regarding disabilities. The Convention and its Optional Protocol were adopted by the UN General Assembly with resolution 61/106 of 13 December 2006 and entered into force on 3 May 2008. The CRPD now has 191 Parties, including Italy (which ratified it with Law no. 18 of 3 March 2009) and the European Union. The Convention presents an added value compared to other international agreements on human rights of the United Nations as it provides for ad hoc protection for disabled people and marks, at the same time, a cultural paradigm shift regarding disability which places the person and the rights of she. The new model of disability on which the Convention is based should also be reflected in internal adaptation regulations. This instrument is included in the group of core treaties identified by the Secretary General of the United Nations as representing the key objectives of the UN.

On 3 March 2024 a petition was sent to the President of the Italian Senate, and on 14 March to the Chamber of Deputies, to raise public awareness of the need for greater and full implementation of the Convention in Italy.
Sergio Marchisio, UNINT Professor, together with a team of researchers from the Institute of International Legal Studies of the National Research Council, edited the commentary on the Convention in Italian which was then translated into English.
