Course description

The Bachelor's degree course in Political Science, International Security and Crime (L-36) aims to provide the intellectual tools suitable for the creation and development of a solid cybersecurity culture. Achieving this objective is fundamental and is possible through a multidisciplinary approach.

The course is designed on the basis of the ENISA (EU Agency for Cybersecurity) Skills Framework, which outlines, also to support universities, the framework of skills required to strengthen cybersecurity at a European level.

Training in cybersecurity also means teaching how to recognize and eradicate the different and increasing threats, aligning with the requests of institutions and private actors in the European public space. This helps to ensure that all subjects and actors who have access to sensitive data and/or systems meet all agreed security levels.

Proposing a curriculum emphasizing cybersecurity is a strategic and timely move, as cyber threats represent an unavoidable challenge.
The course aims to prepare students to become experts in the management of cyber threats, in line with the needs of institutions and the market.
The multidisciplinary approach strengthens the quality of education, providing graduates with a comprehensive understanding of the challenges relating to cybersecurity,  international security and fight against crime and allowing them to qualify as cyber legal, policy and compliance officers.

Subjects

During the course, the students will explore different areas of study (with particular emphasis on the cybersecurity branch), acquiring the ability to operate with competence and critical ability on various fronts of knowledge. Attention to security in the cyber world requires a cross-cutting teaching approach involving different fields of knowledge. The objective of the course is to provide adequate preparation that suits the needs of the labor market and the challenging world that we live in, as well as solid theoretical foundations that can give graduates the right tools to adapt their knowledge to any kind of challenge. Nowadays, security policies must develop in prevention and scenario analysis, taking into consideration the deterritorialization and "virtualization" processes.

During the course, the students will acquire knowledge and tools suitable for understanding the various problems related to cybersecurity and related phenomena:

  • under a  legal point of view, focusing on the study of laws (national and EU) on cybersecurity for in-depth knowledge of compliance requirements and good practices to combat cyber threats;
  • under a  geopolitical point of view, identifying the international actors operating in the cyber world to implement their policies, studying their strategic techniques and procedures;
  • under a  sociological point of view, exploring the appropriate ways to spread awareness and education on cybersecurity, especially in light of technological transformations;
  • under a  criminal point of view, understanding investigation procedures for cybercrime and regulatory frameworks (national and EU) aimed at strengthening structures to combat cyber threats;
  • under a  linguistic point of view, teaching the most spoken languages ​​in the world to be even more connected in a global world where challenges are increasingly common and shared;
  • under a  cybersecurity point of view, providing appropriate training to create profiles suitable for the public and private sectors and equipped with skills in securing systems and in developing plans to tackle threats to devices.

 

The course will offer the opportunity to acquire knowledge and skills in the areas of:

  • international relations, in order to analyze and understand the impact that cyber threats have on national and international balances, affecting relations between the main state and non-state actors;
  • geopolitics, to understand how the exponential technological development in the field of cybersecurity can affect conflicts and military balances, envisaging new scenarios of agreements and alliances between major international interlocutors;
  • security, with particular reference to the cyberspace. In this sense, the course aims to provide a solid knowledge and culture of cybersecurity, raising awareness of EU, national, and corporate policies in the field of data protection. This will provide comprehensive knowledge, allowing the timely identification of companies' weaknesses and vulnerabilities (physical infrastructures, information systems, business processes);
  • crime, with a specific focus on cyber crime. In this context, the actions and decisions taken also in other countries will be explored in depth to achieve a better ability on the part of the State bodies (in particular the judiciary) to update the traditional investigation techniques, through the adoption of the investigative tools made available from technological innovation;
  • policies and good practices regarding the fight against cyber threats and the creation of an awareness and culture accessible to all on the main themes and critical issues arising from the cyber world from a national and global perspective;
  • protection of privacy, also mainly oriented towards cyber space and data processing.

The course aims to offer the student the fundamental elements relating to the study of the Italian constitutional system and its place in an international legal context, also having regard to internal and external threats and the tools for their prevention and contrast.

The course explores an exhaustive framework of reference of the most important challenges, from the environmental one, to the energy one, from the precariousness of the balance of power between the main players on the global geopolitical scene, to demographic imbalances, to the dizzying evolution of technologies.

The course analyzes the fundamental notions of information technology and its application in terms of cybersecurity, from the peculiar perspective of in-depth analysis of security tools aimed at preventing cyber threats.

The course aims to deepen scientific activity in the fields that elaborate the reasons for philosophical research through critical comparison with other cultural experiences and the theoretical foundations of philosophy will be explored, addressing topics such as epistemology, ontology and logic.

The course concerns the theoretical, historical and methodological preparatory work for social research, the epistemological boundaries of sociology, the technical-methodological tools and techniques for the analysis of micro and macro sociological processes.

The object of the course is the study of the relationships between state and non-state actors in international relations, having regard to treaties, political relations, European integration and threats that undermine the balance of international peace.

The teaching focuses on the management of data breaches due to aggressive interventions by hackers, the protocols for managing procedural and reputational emergencies, prevention activities and compliance with procedures and behaviors.

The teaching concerns the triple approach, legal, sociological and IT to the phenomenon of the criminal use of digital technologies, to the expressiveness of new criminal typologies, to the difference between cybercrimes and computer crime, to prevention and training strategies.

The course explores cyber risk and its optimal communication methods starting from the analysis of the difference between real impact and potential impact, the construction of a control activity based on the real impact and communication techniques.

The teaching aims to provide students with cognitive tools to discern the extent of the challenges posed by AI and the Metaverse, also in light of the ethical limits that must assist the use of big data within a framework of coherence with constitutional principles.

The course offers the student an awareness of the fundamental right to privacy and its declination in terms of national and international legislation, with particular reference to the telematic space.

Security strategies and cyber space
The course aims to provide the student with adequate elements of knowledge on tools to prevent and combat hacking, on risk assessment and their management in the cyber space, involving measures and policies aimed at protecting computer systems, networks and cryptographic infrastructures. from cyber threats.

Comparative policies in cybersecurity
The course offers a comparative framework relating to the analysis of policies and strategies adopted by different countries to address the challenges of cybersecurity, examining the differences and similarities in regulatory, legislative and operational responses to malicious activities in cyber space.

The course focuses on analyzing the laws and regulations adopted by different countries to address cybersecurity challenges, analyzing specific regulations to protect their digital infrastructures and prevent cyber attacks.

Cyber ​​Legal Policy
The course aims to analyze the legal aspects that pertain to the sphere of security in the contemporary context, having regard to the transformation of risk due to the use of the web in every sector of human activity.

The course focuses on profiling in the context of cybersecurity and involves the collection and analysis of data and online behavior to identify the characteristics, patterns and motivations of individuals involved in criminal activity.

Digital forensic investigation
The course provides the student with the fundamental elements of computer forensics which deals with the processing of digital data of any type for the purpose of detecting computer evidence useful for investigative activities.

The laboratory focuses on the evaluation and analysis of the cybersecurity infrastructure and web reputation of online systems, networks and platforms whose objective is to gain practical experience in evaluating and enhancing the cybersecurity posture of online organizations and entities.

Computer security, social networks and privacy laboratory
The laboratory focuses on understanding and applying cybersecurity practices in contexts related to social networks, in order to acquire specific skills in cybersecurity and privacy.

Laboratory activities and soft skills

Il Computer security, social networks and privacy laboratory aims to provide basic training for knowledge of the security requirements of IT systems and the main threats connected to them.

Il Laboratory of e-democracy and e-participation aims to provide an overview, also through the in-depth analysis of supranational experiences (European, international and comparative), of the interrelationship between technological tools and democratic decision-making processes in contemporary society.

There is also the possibility of participating in professional courses, useful for developing further skills in the field of programming languages ​​and cybersecurity. Those enrolled in the course have the opportunity to participate free of charge during the entire study cycle in one of the following courses:

Study plan compilation guide

At the beginning of the academic year, the university organizes topic days dedicated to guidance on filling in study plans. During the meeting, which teachers, the Guidance Office, and Student Services participate in, several pieces of information will be provided: technical indications relating to the compilation of the plan, general information regarding the Academic offer, and guidance on obtaining credits.

Academic offer: Languages

The language courses imparted concern English (with the teaching of English for Political Science) or a language of the student's choice between French, Spanish and German. Furthermore, the study plan allows you to undertake the study of a second language chosen from Arabic, Chinese, French, Japanese, English, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and German (active teachings within the three-year degree course in Languages ​​for interpreting and translation – L-12).

Language certifications

During the academic year 2024/2025, the University Language Center (Centro Linguistico di Ateneo) offers newly enrolled students (enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's degree in any of the majors offered in the University's Academic offer) the possibility to obtain a language certification based on their skill level.

Every student, during their study career, will be able to take an international certification exam, without any additional costs, choosing among the certifications affiliated with the University: CAMBRIDGE, TOEFL iBT, DELE, CAPLE, TORFL, DELFDALF.

Study and internship experiences abroad

The Course, with a strong international focus, offers the possibility to spend a Stay Abroad for study or internship purposes thanks to the network of over 100 international agreements signed with European and non-European universities. The University also has over 700 active agreements to carry out internships at public and private sector institutions in Italy and abroad.

The Course, in response to the emerging needs of the labor market, trains the following professional profiles:

  • cyber legal, policy and compliance officer;
  • expert in defining and communicating cybersecurity visions, strategies, policies and procedures;
  • analyst in the evaluation of methods and tools for investigating and combating cyber crime;
  • experienced in monitoring and evaluating the cybersecurity status of systems and the impact of cybersecurity incidents;
  • legal counsel in developing cybersecurity governance processes for recommended remediation solutions to ensure compliance;
  • expert in identifying and monitoring the tactics, techniques and procedures used by cyber threat actors and their trends;
  • skilled coordinator of secure development, integration and maintenance of cybersecurity components in line with standards and other related requirements;
  • expert in the design and development of awareness, training and education programs on topics related to cybersecurity and data protection through teaching and training methods, techniques and tools;
  • experienced provider of technical development, integration, testing, implementation, operation, maintenance, monitoring and support of cybersecurity solutions;
  • analyst for fundamental or basic research to anticipate and facilitate innovation in the cybersecurity sector also through cooperation with other interested parties.

Admission requirements, assessment of prior knowledge, additional training obligations and pre-courses

Access to the course is subject to the possession of a five-year secondary school diploma, or another qualification obtained abroad recognized as suitable, or another diploma which gives access to university courses in accordance with current legislation. .

Candidates in possession of the required requirements will have to undergo a non-selective online interview aimed at verifying possession of:

  • adequate knowledge of the Italian language;
  • a basic knowledge of the first foreign language studied;
  • an adequate level of general culture in the historical, political and legal fields.

Based on the results of the interview, additional training obligations (OFA) may be identified and assigned, to be fulfilled within the first academic year of enrolment.

In order to support the start of studies, three pre-courses are planned:

  • Law pre-course particularly suitable for freshmen who have never taken exams relating to the principles of law.
  • Geopolitics pre-course
  • Pre-course in Criminal Law

As part of the activities related to quality assurance, UNINT, since 2021, is certified in accordance with UNI EN ISO 9001:2015. The first certificate was released on February 8 2021, confirmed for 2022 and 2023. On January 31 2024, the new certification of conformity with the requirements ISO 9001:2015 for "Teaching, training, research and third mission activities" was obtained for the year 2024. This certified the correct definition and execution of the processes implemented within the University.
