The master's degree course in Interpreting and Translation (LM-94) is structured to provide advanced skills in conference and liaison interpreting and specialized translation. It therefore represents the natural continuation of the bachelor's degree in Languages ​​for Interpreting and Translation (L-12) and in general of linguistic bachelor's degrees. 

The course offers graduates the opportunity to compete with prestigious professional realities, due to consolidated partnerships with European institutions. As a consequence of its recognized quality requirements it is part of the EMT network (European Master's in Translation) promoted by the European Commission and is among the four Italian members of CIUTI (Conférence Internationale Permanente d'Instituts Universitaires de Traducteurs et Interprètes).

Curricula and subjects

The structure of the Course allows you to define the study plan by choosing between two directions: Translation and Interpreting. It is also possible to attend amixed coursein interpreting and translation, which may be monolingual or bilingual
The courses are designed to facilitate, through in-depth knowledge of the relevant specialized languages, professional integration in the corporate, commercial, diplomatic, institutional, medical and legal fields.

The Translation degree course provides advanced translation skills from two foreign languages ​​chosen from Arabic, Chinese, French, English, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and German into Italian on specialized texts in the economic, legal, sociopolitical, non-fiction-literary, IT, multimedia and biomedical fields. Related to French, English, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and German, courses on translation from Italian into the foreign language is provided. French-English-French and Spanish-English-Spanish cross translation courses are also provided. In addition to this, advanced level skills in documentary and terminological research, in text drafting and revision. Furthermore, there is a focus on the most recent technologies applied to translation, through specific training modules including assisted translation and post-editing, terminology and localization, transcreation for international marketing.

The Interpretingdegree course provides specialized skills in the different techniques and methods of interpretation (dialogical, consecutive and simultaneous) from and into two foreign languages ​​chosen from Arabic, Chinese, French, English, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and German (with the exception of consecutive and simultaneous Chinese and Arabic, available only into Italian). Cross interpreting courses are also offered in the following language combinations: 

  • French-English-French;
  • Russian-English-Russian; 
  • Spanish-English-Spanish.

 

Of particular importance is the interpretation from and into Italian Sign Language (LIS), as well as the English Interpretation Laboratory from and into Italian Sign Language.
For Arabic and Chinese, written and oral expression courses are provided to increase language skills.

The course provides students with basic knowledge of the main software tools for translation, localization and post-editing projects. It also provides tools for managing terminology and creating glossaries useful to interpreters and translators. In the teaching sector, it is possible to obtain Trados Studio Level 1, MultiTerm and Post-editing certifications.

Language and linguistics (French, English, Portuguese, Spanish, German)
The course, entirely taught in the foreign language, aims to provide students with essential tools and skills to deal with linguistic issues related to the language. It promotes a critical approach and contrastive perspectives addressing specific language problems.

Language and Linguistics (Arabic)
The course explores the complexity of the contemporary sociolinguistic contexts in the Arabic-speaking world and, through the analysis of segments of speech in various contexts, offers an in-depth knowledge of the history and main characteristics of Arabic dialects.

Language and Linguistics (Chinese) 
The course aims to provide students with lexical, morphological and methodological tools in different specialized languages. The aim is to provide the skills and knowledge necessary to deal with various professional situations as interpreters and translators.

Language and linguistics (Russian)
The course aims to improve linguistic proficiency, allowing you to grasp nuances and understand new lexical mechanisms; it promotes contrastive thinking on the peculiarities of phenomena, discourses and contexts.

The course aims to reflect on the problems related to the translation process, in consideration of the different textual types, as well as the ethical and professional aspects that concern the relationship with the client, with the author and with the target audience.

The course offers foundations in textual and pragmatic linguistics. It focuses on linguistic-textual and pragmalinguistic analysis, focusing on linguistic context consideration and functionalist textuality, as well as the ability to apply discursive strategies in written and oral communication.

The course focuses on the process of standardization of the Italian language, examining different linguistic varieties currently in use. It delves into historical and synchronic lexicography, integrating linguistic structures description with the text revision process.

The course aims to provide the foundations of modern languages education and methods for analyzing texts and manuals specific to teaching. It focuses on the critical reflection between languages, the analysis of interlanguage and the development of skills to choose suitable teaching approaches and activities .

The course aims to develop specific translation skills from Italian into the language of study. The activities will focus on specialized texts from various fields and will aim at improving specialized linguistic and translation skills.
